Courtney Burns

Courtney has been practicing since 2012. She began her counseling career as a therapist in the office of Raj Shiwach MD PA in DeSoto, TX. Her time there consisted of treating individuals and intensive outpatient groups with mood disorders, trauma, and grief. She then took a position as an intensive outpatient therapist at Wise Regional Health System in Decatur, TX. While there she worked specifically with geriatrics, mood disorders, personality disorders, and substance abuse. She also gained extensive group experience as an intensive outpatient therapist at Valley Hope of Grapevine working exclusively with pilots and the HIMS program in order to rehabilitate pilots with substance abuse issues to return to work. Since going into private practice at Las Colinas Counseling Center she continues to see individuals and is a HIMS-approved aftercare provider for pilots. Having worked in other settings before going into private practice, she cares deeply about women’s issues and helping women find freedom in all areas of their life. Additionally, since marrying and becoming a parent to her four children she enjoys working with parents in connecting and forming strong bonds with their children.

Counseling Approach and Areas of Practice

One of Courtney’s goals in counseling is to meet people where they are, so they feel seen, heard, and accepted. She uses an eclectic approach to counseling because each person brings unique challenges, goals, perspectives, and experiences to therapy. She also believes that the body, mind, and soul all work together to make us healthy and whole, so she incorporates health/physical wellness and spirituality into her practice. Life change happens in the context of safe relationships and therapy is an excellent place to do that. She continues to work with individuals to help resolve mood issues, trauma, grief, eating disorders, substance abuse, parent coaching, women’s issues, and relational issues.
